How to Engrave Glassware

Glassware engraving is a popular method that is used to engrave things such as glasses and vases. Many people engrave as a hobby or do so professionally. Opt to engrave at home rather than sending it out to a professional engraver. There are a few steps to follow to achieve a professional piece.

  1. First: Choose a glass object

Select a glass object that needs engraving. The most popular choices are either a glass or a vase, but other objects work just as well. Mirrors, windows, picture frames and key chains are all nice options.

  2. Second: Decide on pattern or stencil

Choose a pattern or stencil, and place it behind the glass surface. Make sure the stencil or pattern is placed directly in position to avoid any mistakes. It is important to clean the glass surface to get rid of all dirt and dust.

  3. Third: Plan work space

Find a good space to engrave, such as a wide table or floor. Use a clamp for extra hold and support if the glass object is rather large in size. Keep in mind that it is important to apply the right pressure when holding the glass down. Too much pressure may break the glass, whereas too little pressure may cause slippage and lost control of the glass object.

  4. Fourth: Wear a face mask or goggles

Be sure to always protect your face by wearing a mask or goggles. Shield your eyes and mouth from dust, glass and dirt, and wear ear plugs if the noise from the drill bothers you.

  5. Fifth: Place pattern and engrave

Take a removable crayon, marker or chalk to stencil out the pattern that is taped behind the glass surface. This makes for good guidance when engraving with a drill. Drilling causes glass particles and dust to float through the air, so take a wet rag and wipe frequently. Drill until the project is complete.
